Sol 1067: Valinor Hills – Ingenuity’s Final Resting Place Mastcam-Z Mosaic

After 72 successful flights, Ingenuity, the Martian helicopter, landed for the last time after one of its blades accidentally struck the sand dunes surrounding it. This final resting spot is colloquially named Valinor Hills, a reference to Valinor – the Undying Lands of the Elves – in J.R.R. Tolken’s Lord of the Rings series. Indeed, the 50-centimeter (20-inch) tall Ingenuity, also observed in higher detail by SuperCam, will stay here forever, undying in our hearts. Though it’s grounded, the helicopter has been programmed to take images of its surroundings every day to record how the Martian environment changes over time. Perseverance is now out of communications range of Ingenuity, but hopefully someday, if the two fellow travelers are ever back again in range, there will be a chance to transmit those images back to Earth, via the rover. For scale, Ingenuity was about 400 meters (0.25 miles) away from Perseverance when this mosaic was taken on February 20th, 2024, the 1068th sol of the mission.

This mosaic is featured in our Postcards from Mars series!
