Mastcam-Z

Successful Core #1!

Contributed by Sanna Alwmark

This is my most recent favorite image! On Sept 1st, 2021 (mission sol 190) Perseverance’s robotic arm drilled into a Mars rock named “Rochette” and retrieved its first successful rock core. Mastcam-Z imaged the contents of the corer, bit, and unsealed tube, and transmitted the images back to Earth – confirming the success of this historic effort. This image shows the core in the unsealed tube.
