Mastcam-Z’s 360° Panorama Collection

Over the first 300 or so sols of the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover’s mission in Jezero crater, the rover’s Mastcam-Z imaging system has acquired 12 large panoramas that span the full range of 360° in azimuth around the rover. This special subset of the many hundreds of smaller-coverage mosaics is featured here in this blog entry, which is intended to be a “one stop shop” for information about and access to these panoramas. I will maintain and update this compilation as the mission continues.

The Table and subsequent text and link entries below provide a brief summary of and access to Mastcam-Z 360° panoramas acquired to date, in chronological order. Files are provided in JPEG and PNG formats at the highest possible resolution coming out of the cameras (which depends on the zoom and compression settings that were used to acquire and downlink the images from Mars). Note that some of the files, especially those at our maximum zoom setting, are HUGE — several Gigabytes or more! Most of the images are in a simple cylindrical projection, with 0° azimuth (due north in the Martian or Site frame) in the center and 180° azimuth (due south) at the left and right edges, and typically -70° elevation at the bottom and +10° elevation at the top (unless otherwise noted). Some of the images are also projected into a vertical (linear) project, simulating the view one would have by hovering above the scene and looking down on the rover and its surroundings. While all of these mosaics span 360° in azimuth around the rover, only a subset of them cover all possible elevation angles as well (that is, only a subset cover ALL of the ground from right around the rover all the way out to the local horizon). The goal is to eventually post links to all of the Mastcam-Z team-generated versions of these mosaics here, as well as in dedicated pages on our Panoramas & Mosaics public web site page.
