Jacob (Jake) Schaffner is the electronics and logic lead for the Digital Electronics Assembly (DEA) component of the Mastcam-Z instrument. He designed this hardware as a junior electronics engineer for the Mars Science Laboratory MARDI/MAHLI/Mastcam instrument suite. He is currently Managing Engineer at Malin Space Science Systems and architected the ECAM modular space camera platform now widely utilized for space imaging applications. He also developed the Lander Vision System Camera (LCAM) for the Mars2020 mission. He cut his teeth as a student working on CubeSats at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo; He was project manager and lead engineer for their first CubeSat, and designed control electronics to support the first-ever CubeSat launch.
